COMMUTERS have a new way to hop onto the London Underground using their iPhones.

Starting today, you no longer need to unlock your gadget every time you use Apple Pay to tap in or out of a station.

You can now hop through the barriers on the London Underground a little quicker when using Apple Pay
The Sun

Instead, your iPhone or Apple Watch can simply be held up to a card reader at a barrier at any time to pass through, like you would use an Oyster card.

Previously, tube users had to “prime” their gadgets using Face or Touch ID before accessing the Underground.

This often led to frustrating queues as Apple devotees fumbled with their gadgets once they reached the barriers.

The new feature, dubbed Express Transport, rolled out to Apple gadgets across London on Monday, December 2.

Apple
Starting today, you no longer need to unlock your gadget every time you use Apple Pay to tap in or out of a station[/caption]

It’s also available in other locations across the globe including New York, Australia, China and Japan.

Apple Pay launched in 2014, and allows iPhone and Apple Watch users to pay for things by holding their gadgets over a card reader.

It works like any contactless payment and you’re charged through your bank card. The tool can be used to pay for goods at a shop or scan onto transport services.

Around one in five journeys on the Underground are paid for using a watch or smartphone, according to Transport for London.

iPhone tricks to try today

Here are some of the best...

  • Typing cursor– When typing, hold down the space bar to turn your keyboard into a trackpad, letting you move around words and sentences more easily
  • Close all Safari tabs– To do this in one go, simply hold the overlapped squares in the bottom right-hand corner, and press close all tabs
  • Delete lots of photos quickly– Hold down on a photo and then drag your finger diagonally in Photos to select lots of images at once, then hit delete
  • Convert currency quickly– Swipe down from the top of your Home screen (or swipe left to right on an iPhone X), then tap in the bar and type a currency (like $200) and it will automatically covert to your local currency
  • Check if you’re due a battery upgrade– Batteries inside smartphones degrade over time. Just go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health, and check out the Maximum Capacity reading. Generally a battery is considered worn when you’re down to 80% capacity. If you’re below, you can buy a battery swap from Apple
  • Move apps around faster– Hold an app until it starts wiggling, then (while still holding) tap other apps, causing them to stack so you can move them around easier

To activate Express Transport, simply head to your settings and tap “Wallet and Apple pay”.

From here, scroll down to travel card and select which Apple Pay card you would like to use as your Express Travel Card.

Complete the verification process with a Face or Touch ID scan and your gadget is ready to go.

The new system works on any iPhone from the 6S onward, including the SE.

London Underground ‘hotbed for coronavirus’ with more people ‘highly likely’ to be infected as bug hits capital

THE London Underground subway network could be a hotbed for coronavirus, experts warned today as the first case of the deadly bug arrived in the capital.

Nine people are being treated for the killer virus in the UK amid warnings more Brits were “highly likely” to be infected.

And the latest patient in the UK, believed to be a woman, is now being treated at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital in London.

She is understood to have flown into the capital from China before testing positive for the bug, now officially named as the Covid-19 virus.

The desperate hunt is now on for people who may have come into contact with her.

And experts today warned London’s high-density population could increase the risk of person-to-person transmission.

Dr Robin Thompson, from Oxford University, said: “In general, if an initial case is in a densely populated area, then the risk of sustained person-to-person transmission following is higher.

“This is exacerbated by the fact that London is a transport hub, and the Underground could provide a network to spread the virus quickly.

“As a result, given this case was in London, it might be expected that there is an increased risk posed by this case compared to the others we have seen.”

It comes as…

  • Dad’s agony as eight-month-old son becomes youngest Brit treated for suspected coronavirus
  • Man Utd star Odion Ighalo ‘quarantined’ and banned from training ground over deadly bug fears
  • Hospitals to set up “assessment pods” to keep suspected victims away from A&Es
  • Twelve schools placed on infection alert as panicked parents pull kids out of class
  • Super-spreader Stephen Walsh is out of hospital as dozen others at risk are traced

And Prof Paul Cosford, from Public Health England yesterday told the BBC more cases of coronavirus in the UK were “highly likely”.

Dr Michael Head, from University of Southampton, said: “The extensive London public transport system provides potential opportunities for transmission, with many people mixing in relatively small spaces.”

London’s congested transport network and 8.9million population will make it a nightmare to track down potential victims to be tested.

Scientists have warned that London is at a greater risk than any other city in Europe due to the number of Chinese visitors that flock there each year.

More than 142,000 tourists arrive in London from China between January and the middle of March every year.

A total of 1,759 people have been tested for coronavirus in the UK, of which 1,750 were confirmed negative and now nine positive.

Five cases have been confirmed in Brighton, two cases in York, another in an undisclosed location and the ninth diagnosis in London.

It comes as 12 schools in Sussex were placed on infection alert with teachers and pupils told to quarantine themselves.

Five people in the county have been diagnosed with coronavirus and dozens who came into contact with them have been ordered to self-isolate by Public Health England (PHE).

Since then, schools in Brighton, Hove and Eastbourne have pupils or staff in quarantine as a precaution.

Brighton has become the epicentre of the virus after a cub Scout leader — dubbed the coronavirus “super-spreader” — unwittingly brought it into the UK last month following a business trip to Singapore.

Stephen Walsh, 53, from Hove, may have spread the virus to dozens of people without suffering any symptoms himself.

His next-door neighbour, Ian Henshall, 59, said Mr Walsh is now “very concerned” that he will be held responsible for the outbreak.

Mr Henshall told the Mirror: “I’ve spoken to his wife Cathy directly and to Steve by email and they are absolutely terrified of being made scapegoats for all this which would be totally unfair.”

Mr Walsh was discharged from St Thomas’ Hospital yesterday after being analysed in its isolation unit.

THE vile tube racist who ranted “you’re all going back” at black passengers has been unmasked as the son of wealthy building firm owners.

Billy Steele, 31, launched his sickening racist tirade on the Central Line towards three black passengers, one of whom knocked him out with a single punch.

Billy Steele taunted black passengers on the tube telling them ‘you’re all going back’

The yob’s mother Toni Steele today said her son handed himself over to cops and said he won’t press assault charges.

Speaking from her £800,000 home in leafy Coulsdon, south London, Mrs Steele said: “Billy is on this video that has gone viral. He has gone to the police and owned up. He doesn’t want the man who hit him to be punished.”

She added he is “getting help” for his behaviour.

He lives in a smart, gated block of apartments, in Mottingham, south-east London where flats sell for around £320,000 and neighbours said the construction worker had been in trouble before.

Two years ago, he was thrown out of the Prince of Wales pub refusing to leave a barmaid alone, but he stormed back in moment later, ripping his shirt off and offering to fight drinkers inside.

He was punched back out the bar, left with a broken nose and was never seen there again.

‘SELF-DESTRUCT MODE’

A former friend told the MailOnline: “The lads in the Prince of Wales ended up breaking his nose.

“This is when people started to distance themselves from him as it was starting to get difficult to go out with him.

“He was never a problem until the last couple of years, I’d never known him to ever be violent but it’s almost like he wants a reaction.

“I believe he needs help for his mental health. I don’t think he intends it to be malicious but he’s almost in self-destruct mode.

“Even from the videos showing him on the tube train, he doesn’t seem to make sense, he’s speaking gibberish.

“I haven’t really spoken to him from the turn of the year due to his behaviour.”

The friend said Mr Steele sometimes attended Arsenal home games at the Emirates and used to play football himself in Honor Oak Park in South London.

Another local resident said: “Billy isn’t the most popular of residents in the flats. He drinks quite a bit.

“He hasn’t been seen since the weekend. Nobody knows where he is or how badly he was hurt after being punched.”

The white man, who was not wearing a face covering, was filmed on the London Underground telling a group of black me “you’re my pets” in his vile rant.

Billy was eventually punched by one of the passengers as he hurled racist abuse

He was left lying in a heap on the carriage floor after being punched

He shouted at the passengers “you’re black… oh my god” as the woman filming said “what’s that supposed to mean?”

Another passenger told him: “Not a single person on the train wants to hear that garbage coming out of your mouth. Disgusting.”

He then started swinging on the handrails singing “they’re lesser than us” and telling the black men “you’re my pets”.

One furious passenger told him: “It’s not funny being racist”.

The man had been screaming vile racist abuse at passengers on the Tube

His tirade had shocked other passengers on the Underground

The man then started screaming “violence”, which led to a woman accuse him of being “EDL scum” – an apparent reference to the English Defence League.

The man shouted: “I don’t roll with EDL scum”.

She then said: “You’re worse than them then,” and he shouted “yes”.

He then told her to “f*** off c*** face”.

As the train pulled up to Bank station, the man gestured at the three black men as they got up from their seats.

He then squared up to them before one of the three punched him in the face, causing him to fall backwards and crash his head onto the floor of the train.

THIS is the disgusting moment a yob without a face mask spits on a Tube carriage floor in front of horrified passengers.

The video was filmed on the District Line just before Sloane Square in Central London at 5pm yesterday.

Twitter

Footage shared to Twitter showed the passenger spitting on the floor of the carriage.

Other passengers looked on as he leaned forward and spat out white liquid.

A fellow Tube rider who shared the video on social media said the passenger also threw takeaway rubbish around the carriage.

They wrote: “No mask. Great pandemic behaviour.”

Passengers have to wear masks on the Tube to stop the spread of Covid-19.

Those who don’t follow the rules can be kicked off the train or fined £200, with the fine doubling each time someone is caught.

A Transport for London spokesperson said: “We are shocked by this footage and condemn all incidents of spitting on our network.

LONDON Underground staff have called off plans to strike for four days starting today.

The protest had been in response to plans to abolish separate pay grades for drivers who work nights.

The Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT) announced the move on Tuesday, July 27, 2021 and described the decision as a “cash led move aimed at shunting staff around”.

The strikes, had been set to affect night tube services tonight and Thursday but will now no longer take place.

A TUBE strike set for next week that threatened millions of commuters with travel chaos has been cancelled.

The two days of strikes – sparked over a driver’s pay dispute – was suspended after further progress in talks today.

London Tube drivers planned next week

Members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union were due to strike on August 24 and 26.

Drivers were set to walk out for 24 hours from midday on both days.

All lines were affected by the strikes, with no or very limited services.

TfL drivers had been protesting against plans to abolish separate pay grades for those who work nights.

But their bosses said that if the action had gone ahead, passengers would be faced with a heavily reduced service across all Tube lines for most of the week.

General Secretary Mick Lynch said: “Following further progress in ACAS talks today our Executive has decided that there are sufficient grounds to suspend next week’s tube strike action.

LONDON’s 24-hour transport network is back on the Central and Victoria lines.

Here’s all you need to know about the night tube.

Passengers pass an advert for the night tube on a platform at Oxford Circus underground station, in London, as the new night tube service launches on August 19 operating on Friday and Saturday nigh...
The night tube is back on certain lines

What is the night tube?

The night tube is the metro in London that runs throughout the night on certain days and lines.

Former Mayor Boris Johnson’s brain child was held back by a year as the Rail, Maritime and Transport Union (RMT) clashed with TfL over pay and conditions.

But the project took off in 2016 and after a staggered start all five proposed lines are running all-night services for Londoners on the weekends with the London Overground now set to join them.

Which lines stay open?

The first lines to take on the 24-hour service were the Central and Victoria lines on August 19, 2016.

Central line services run between Ealing Broadway and Loughton/Hainault while the entire Victoria line stays open.

Services were then launched on the Northern line and the Piccadilly line joined the network in.

And in July, 2017, it was announced the London Overground, also referred to as the Orange Line, will operate all night on Friday and Saturdays between New Cross Gate and Dalston Junction – with the service to then be extended to Highbury & Islington in 2018.

The Northern line ran a 24-hour from Morden via Camden Town and on to Edgeware/High Barnet with no service on the Bank or Mill Hill East branches.

Piccadilly line ran between Cockfosters and Heathrow Terminal 5 with no services on the Terminal 4 loop or between Uxbridge and Acton Town.

TfL said they “plan to expand the night time service to parts of the Metropolitan, Circle, District, and Hammersmith & City lines once our modernisation programmes are complete”.

Since the pandemic when the Night Tube stopped, only the Central and Victoria have been announced to make a come back. The Jubilee, Piccadilly, Northern and Overground lines have not returned yet.

What lines are on the Night Tube and how regular are the trains?

Victoria line– trains run on average every 10 minutes across the entire line

Central line– trains run approximately every 10 minutes between White City and Leytonstone and approximately every 20 minutes between Ealing Broadway to White City and Leytonstone to Loughton/ Hainault. No service between North Acton and West Ruislip, Loughton and Epping and Woodford and Hainault

Jubilee line– trains run on average every 10 minutes across the entire line

Northern line– trains run on average every 8 minutes between Morden and Camden Town and approximately every 15 minutes from Camden Town to High Barnet / Edgware. Night Tube services will not stop at Charing Cross until July 2017. No service on the Mill Hill East and Bank branches

Piccadilly line– trains run on average every 10 minutes between Cockfosters and Heathrow Terminal 5. No service on the Terminal 4 loop, or between Acton Town and Uxbridge

London Overground– trains will run between New Cross Gate and Dalston Junction, before being extended to Highbury & Islington in 2018

How regular are the trains?

Victoria line services run every 10 minutes between all stations.

Central line trains also run at 10 minute intervals between White City and Leytonstone, and every 20 minutes between White City and Ealing Broadway and the same between Leytonstone and Loughton/Hainault.

No night tube services run between Loughton and Epping, Woodford and Hainault or North Acton and West Ruislip.

Jubilee services run at 10 minute intervals calling at all stations.

Piccadilly line trains between Cockfosters and Heathrow Terminal 5 are also expected to run every 10 minutes.

Northern line services run at eight minute intervals between Morden and Camden Town and every 15 minutes on from there to High Barnet/Edgware.

How much does it cost?

Normal off-peak fairs apply across the service with day travelcards valid until 4.29am the day after purchase.

There is also staff on hand at all stations while the service is in operation to assist passengers.

Additionally TfL has said there is “an enhanced policing presence during the overnight services”, as more than 100 cops have been deployed to patrol the 144 stations that will stay open through the night each weekend.

City Hall believes the Night Tube provides a boost of over £70million a year to London’s economy, as well as supporting approximately 2,000 jobs.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan told The Evening Standard: “Our Night Tube services have been a real success right across the capital, so I’m delighted to announce that we’ll be bringing the night Overground to the East London line later this year.

Is the Night Tube safe?

The Night Tube offers a safe, low crime environment.
More than 2,500 police and police community support officers and 500 TfL enforcement officers patrol London’s transport network.
Thousands more frontline transport staff support customers and an extensive CCTV network is in place across the Tube when the night tube is running at full capacity.

AS the holiday festivities approach, revellers might be tempted to carry the party over on to their favourite form of transport, The London Underground.

But is it legal to drink alcohol on the Tube – and if caught, can you be fined? We have the lowdown on all the rules.

PA:Press Association
On May 31, 2008, the night before Boris Johnson (Mayor of London at the time) introduced the alcohol ban on the London Underground, travellers enjoyed a tipple or two[/caption]

Can I get fined for drinking alcohol on the Tube?

According to the Transport for London (TfL) conditions of carriage it is prohibited to carry opened containers of alcohol and to drink alcohol on TfL services.

Clause 2.6 of the TfL Conditions of Carriage says: “On our buses, trams and trains, in our bus and rail stations and on tram platforms, you must not: consume alcohol [or] be in possession of an open container of alcohol.”

Famous rule breakers include the MP for Hackney North and Stoke Newington, Diane Abbott, who was pictured in April 2019 swigging a £2 Marks & Spencer mojito on an overground train in North London.

On another occasion, a drunk man with no shoes or trousers was spotted sleeping whilst standing up on a London Tube.

Alcohol was banned on the London Underground on June 1, 2008, in one of Boris Johnson’s first policy statements after he became Mayor of London.

The ruling drew criticism from transport unions who said they were not consulted on the alcohol ban, and that having to confront drinkers could put staff in danger.

On May 31, 2008, the day before the ban came into force, party goers celebrated their final day of freedom with a cocktail party on the London Underground.

Other prohibited acts stipulated by TFL includes smoking and vaping on trains, the use of roller skates or hoverboards, and photography.

Can I get fined for being drunk on the Tube?

According to the General Counsel for TFL, a fine relating to alcohol consumption on the Tube could result in prosecution and a penalty of up to £1000.

TfL do not publish alcohol related incidents on the London Underground, although they do state that in the first instance, a drinker will simply be spoken to politely.

They say that while an arrest may be made if an incident requires this, in general staff will make an initial polite request to stop drinking if necessary.

COMMUTERS facing another day of disruptions across the Tube network.

London commuters are facing another day of chaos as disruption continue across the Tube network after Tuesday’s strike.

TfL said normal services should be operating by mid-morning. Until then, services are expected to be “severely disrupted” – meaning fewer services and packed trains.

A near total shutdown is expected again on Thursday, over threats to pensions and the axing of up to 600 station staff posts to save TfL cash.

TfL said: “Further disruption is expected all day on Thursday March 3, when customers are advised to work from home if they can, and into the morning of Friday March 4, when customers should avoid early morning journeys.”

THE exact date London’s ENTIRE Elizabeth line will open has finally been revealed – over three years after it was originally set to be unveiled.

Travel across the capital is set to be transformed by Crossrail, which will slash journey times and revolutionise transport links.

The £20billion project was originally scheduled to be completed in 2019[/caption]

Dubbed the “most significant addition to our transport network in decades” by Mayor Sadiq Khan, Londoners can’t wait for the new line.

The Elizabeth line has received final authorisation by the Office of Rail and Road, finally putting an end to the constant setbacks.

It means commuters can now officially add May 24 to their calendars as the opening date after rail regulator ORR signed off the project.

They approved all of the swanky new stations – except Bond Street, which will open later – as suitable for full passenger use.

The overall routeway for the line’s complex track and tunnel infrastructure was also given the green light.

After spilling way over budget and years behind schedule, the long-awaited purple line now has just 11 days before its debut.

It promises to cut journey times across the capital, whizzing commuters from Paddington to Canary Wharf in just 17 minutes.

And the jaunt from Abbey Wood in south-east London to Paddington will take half its usual duration – reduced to just 29 minutes.

Transport for Londonn says the “stunning” £20billion project will also provide an additional 10 per cent capacity.

They blasted through the initial budget for the job, which was £14.8billion, with the Government forced to add a further £4billion.

Construction began in May 2009 at Canary Wharf before tunnel work started in May 2012.

The transport top dog hopes to boost the post-pandemic return to work, as the country continues to try and get back to normal.

This has even influenced the date of the official opening day, with May 24 selected in honour of the current “Tuesday to Thursday” office working patterns.

TfL said that for the initial stages of operating, the line will not run on Sundays “to allow a series of testing and software updates”.

ROYAL REVEAL?

But it will run a special service during the Platinum Jubilee weekend.

This has fuelled rumours that the Queen may do the honours of opening the new high-frequency service ahead of her milestone.

The Monarch unveiled the purple roundel for the Elizabeth line back in February 2016.

Londoners will be glad to see the back of the costly project after years of heavy disruption in the city centre.

But the purple line looks to be worth the wait – despite being more than three years overdue after construction delays and difficulties installing complex signalling systems.

It will initially operate in three sections – the western section between Reading, Heathrow and Paddington, the central section between Paddington and Abbey Wood, and the eastern section between Liverpool Street and Shenfield.

There will be 12 trains per hour between Paddington and Abbey Wood from Monday to Saturday 6.30am to 11pm.

‘TRULY HISTORIC’

Work will continue during engineering hours and on Sundays to allow a series of testing and software updates in preparation for more intensive services from the autumn.

But despite the central section boasting beautiful new stations, Bond Street is not yet ready, meaning trains will pass through without stopping until “later this year”.

TfL hope the spectacular fleet of 70 nine-carriage trains will support crucial regeneration across the capital, and estimate it will add £42billion to the UK economy.

Andy Byford, Transport for London’s Commissioner, said: “I am delighted that we can now announce a date for the opening of the Elizabeth line in May.

“We are using these final few weeks to continue to build up reliability on the railway and get the Elizabeth line ready to welcome customers.

“The opening day is set to be a truly historic moment for the capital and the UK, and we look forward to showcasing a simply stunning addition to our network.”

It had been believed the Earl of Wessex would be the only member of the family to mark the occasion this morning.

But royal fans will be delighted to learn the monarch looked particularly spry and cheerful as she joined Edward for the very special event.

She wore springtime yellow, donning a Stewart Parvin double-wool crepe coat and a matching hat by Rachel Trevor-Morgan.

She also carried a walking aid.

During the visit, she bought the very first ticket for the line using a commemorative Oyster card.

“It was fantastic to see her.”

The royal’s appearance in the capital this morning comes just two days after she got her Jubilee celebrations off to a flying start.

The 96-year-old, who has suffered with mobility problems recently, looked very well as she got out of a Range Rover unaided before walking the red carpet at Windsor Castle.

She was hailed by screen idol Tom Cruise, 59, who said at the star-studded TV event: “What she has accomplished has been historic.”

Dame Helen Mirren, who played Her Majesty in 2006 film The Queen, Billions actor Damian Lewis, Bridgerton’s Adjoa Andoh and TV gardener Alan Titchmarsh were also at the star-studded event.

But the Queen looked unimpressed as Dame Helen delivered a speech as Elizabeth I.

And she had a cheeky response when Omid Djalili made a crack about her decision to pull out of the State Opening of Parliament.

The head of state appeared far more moved when her 18-year-old granddaughter Lady Louise drove Prince Philip’s carriage around the arena for the finale of the Royal Windsor Horse Show.

Her eyes glistened with tears as she watched the procession.

The show was a favourite for her late husband, who died last year at the age of 99.

The day before the Queen made her surprise appearance at Paddington Station to open the new Elizabeth Line she received a special gift from the President of Azerbaijan.

Staff who are members of the RMT Union say they’ll stop working at Euston and Green Park stations on Friday, June 3.

Both stations will be key transport points for the tens of thousands of visitors heading to the city for the celebrations.

Green Park is the nearest station to Buckingham Palace.

Workers claim they’re being forced to take action over “bullying” and a “toxic working environment”.

And the PM’s spokesman said: “I don’t think we want to see any disruption to London’s transport system at such a moment when people are trying to come together to honour this Jubilee Year.”

One commenter said they had “absolutely no sympathy” with workers in a post on Twitter.

“Union and workers – despicable behaviour. Do better,” they wrote.

Another said: “Just horrible… holding the country to ransom when we should be celebrating.

“Vile. Nurses don’t strike despite their working conditions.”

And a third wrote: “Completely unacceptable and selfish to be having a London Tube strike on the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee weekend.

“In fact, I think it’s totally unfair to be causing chaos with Tube strikes for London at any time.”

Others branded the union “militant”, with one writing: “Utterly disgusting… was going to go into central London, but I think I’ll play golf instead.”

The strikes will last the entire day.

TUBE MISERY

They will affect Victoria, Jubilee and Piccadilly line services at both stations.

National Rail services at Euston will not be affected.

RMT general secretary Mick Lynch admitted the strikes will cause “significant” problems for people enjoying their hard-earned long weekend.

But he was unrepentant – and said Transport for London bosses need to “do the right thing”.

“Staff at Euston and Green Park tube have suffered years of sustained bullying and intimidation by a manager who has created a toxic working environment,” he said.

“The union has tried in vain to reason with management, but they now will not let local representatives be part of a review into dismissals at the stations, instigated by the manager in question.

‘THEY’RE MILITANT’

“Our strike on June 3 will cause significant disruption to people wishing to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee.

“However, if Tube bosses do the right thing, and deal appropriately with the manager in question, we can find a just resolution to this dispute.”

TfL are understood to be carrying out an investigation into the bullying allegations, the Evening Standard reports.

Bosses have asked the RMT to call off the strikes as a matter of urgency.

A TfL spokesperson said: “We hold our people to high standards and ensure everyone is treated fairly.

“We’re aware of this dispute and are carrying out an urgent review in a bid to resolve it.

Just horrible… they’re holding the country to ransom when we should be celebrating

“We have had a number of meetings with the RMT and are urging them not to take strike action and to continue working with us to find a resolution.”

Drivers are currently coming towards the end of the Underground’s longest-ever strike, which will finish on June 19.

The overnight walkouts affect the Central and Victoria lines every Friday and Saturday.

There will also be overnight strikes on the Jubilee line every Friday and Saturday from Saturday, May 21 – when Night Tube re-opens – until Sunday, June 19.

In early March, commuters were urged to work from home after yet another two-day walkout.

It followed a row over pensions and job cuts.

The baby of Her Majesty’s brood hopped on at Green Park before sharing small talk with commuters.

He clutched a black umbrella in a bid to shield himself from the sporadic showers in the capital today while standing for his journey.

The royal proudly watched on as his mother topped up her Oyster card and bought a Tube ticket during her surprise appearance on Tuesday.

Rumours were swirling that she would do the honours of opening the new high-frequency service ahead of her Platinum Jubilee.

A BRAND new London Tube map has been unveiled ahead of the opening of a new line.

The latest map has been updated with the biggest change to the tube network in recent history – the Elizabeth line.

Transport for London (TfL) published the map with a swish new double purple line which represents the new route as well as its stations.

The railway, named after Her Majesty The Queen who cut the ribbon on her namesake line, will partially unveiled on Tuesday May 24.

It will connect Essex and Reading through London but was initially set to open in December 2018.

The double line rather than a solid line differentiates the Elizabeth line as a new railway as opposed to a London Underground line, TfL said.

The purple line is the second to honour the Queen after the Jubilee Line gained its name in 1977 to celebrate 25 years of Her Majesty on the throne.

Services on the Elizabeth line’s new central section will run from Paddington to Abbey Wood through the tunnels beneath London constructed by Crossrail.

Transport for London improved and opened 41 stations to help service this line.

The Elizabeth line will initially run 12 trains per hour between Paddington and Abbey Wood, Monday to Saturday.

The Elizabeth line will run every five minutes between 6.30am and 11pm, there is no mention of the night tube service on the line yet.

A full timetable should be in place after May 2023.

To get from Liverpool Street Station to Woolwich is expected to take 15 minutes using the new line, having previously taken 45 minutes.

If you want to get from Farringdon to Canary Wharf, it’s estimated to only take you 10 minutes – a third of the current time.

TfL said that for the initial stages of operating, the line will not run on Sundays “to allow a series of testing and software updates,” but will run a special service during the Platinum Jubilee weekend.

STATION TO STATION

The Elizabeth line will serve the following stations:

  • Abbey Wood
  • Acton Main Line
  • Bond Street
  • Brentwood
  • Burnham
  • Canary Wharf
  • Chadwell Heath

The £18.8billion project originally had a budget of £14.8billion but the government added a further £4billion.

Construction began on May 15, 2009, at Canary Wharf and they started tunnel work in May 2012.

The new Barking Riverside station on London Overground in East London has also been added to the map.

To assist customers finding their way to or from the new stations, there have also been updates made to signage and wayfinding across London.

All stations on the Elizabeth line will be step-free by the end of this year.

This will come as a huge relief for hundreds of thousands of disabled people on an Underground which has been hounded for it’s poor accessibility.

ROYAL APPROVAL

It comes as Her Majesty beamed as she joined her youngest son Edward for the opening of the new Elizabeth line at Paddington Station.

It had been believed the Earl of Wessex would be the only member of the family to mark the occasion this morning.

The move will result in huge disruption across the capital as strikers hobble public transport after the long weekend.

Some 4,000 workers are expected to down tools on Monday, June 6.

The action will start a minute after midnight and last for 24 hours.

It will likely force the closure of almost every station in zone 1.

Elsewhere, union RMT has announced a ban on overtime from next Friday, June 3 – the second day of the celebrations – until July 10.

It piles on misery for Londoners, who are facing two significant Tube strikes within just days. Another walkout is planned at Euston and Green Park stations on Friday, June 3.

Green Park is the nearest Tube station for Buckingham Palace.

The union claims Transport for London is slashing jobs and threatening staff pensions.

But Andy Lord, TfL’s chief operating officer, said the accusation is groundless – as no job cuts are planned and around 15,000 members of staff are currently receiving an 8.4 per cent pay rise.

And in a blast at strikers, he said the action is “designed to disrupt the Jubilee.”

“We are extremely disappointed that the RMT has announced unnecessary strike action on June 6 and share Londoners’ frustrations that this, and the linked action short of strike, has been designed to disrupt the Jubilee weekend,” he said.

STRIKES HEAP MISERY ON LONDON

“It is particularly surprising that the RMT has threatened to spoil this moment when the nation is coming together, as nobody has or will lose their jobs as a result of the proposals we have set out and there have been no proposals on pension changes.

“If the RMT chooses to go ahead with this unnecessary action, we will do everything we can to minimise any disruption and ensure everyone can still make the most of the capital throughout the Jubilee weekend.

“The devastating impact of the pandemic on TfL finances has made a programme of change urgently necessary but this change is being delivered in a way that ensures nobody loses their jobs.

“We’re calling on the RMT to work with us, rather than disrupting London’s recovery and our customers, who deserve better.

“We’ve been in regular talks with the RMT and are hoping to find an urgent resolution to this dispute to ensure they can call off this unnecessary action.”

The strike is designed to disrupt the Jubilee weekend… we are extremely disappointed

But RMT general secretary Mick Lynch hit back: “TfL is trying to bulldoze through 600 job losses on the London Underground and our members are not prepared to accept that.

“Station staff play a crucial role in serving the travelling public and were heroes during the 7/7 terrorist attacks.

“Instead of seeking to cut jobs, TfL and Mayor Sadiq Khan need to put further pressure on the government to secure increased funding for the network so we can have a properly staffed modern 21st century Tube.”

Mr Khan said last week the decision to take action over the Jubilee weekend “sent the wrong message”.

It’s feared the plans for June 6 will likely cause as much trouble as walkouts in early March.

The two 24-hour network-wide protests earlier this year caused chaos, with 200 stations closed and huge queues for buses and taxis.

ELIZABETH Line platforms were EVACUATED on the first day of the Tube line opening after a fire alarm sounded in a busy underground station.

Hundreds of commuters were rushed off the new platform at Paddington Station after the alarm was sounded just before 9am this morning.

Transport for London confirmed to The Sun that the station was being evacuated because of a fire alarm going off.

They said it was not a test, and they are working with London Fire Brigade to establish the cause and evacuate all passengers at Paddington.

Hundreds of Londoners were seen leaving the busy station as an overhead alarm warned people to evacuate the building immediately.

TfL security – in their swanky new Elizabeth Line hi-vis jackets – were seen directing people out of the underground towards street level.

It comes just hours after the Elizabeth Line opened to the public– as keen Londoners queued to be the first to ride the new line.

The crowd cheered and rushed forwards when the doors to Paddington Elizabeth line station opened at around 6.20am.

The massive Crossrail railway construction project finally opened this morning after 13 years in the making.

Dubbed the “most significant addition to our transport network in decades” by Mayor Sadiq Khan, Londoners rushed to stations this morning to get a taste of the new line.

Carriages were packed out as hoards of commuters travelled on the slick new service.

Sadiq Khan, who also travelled on the first train this morning, said: “It’s a landmark day.

“I’m excited. I’m like the little boy before Christmas.”

He said the Elizabeth line is a “game-changer” that will “transform our city”.

TfL commissioner Andy Byford said the Elizabeth line service was “so far so good” and “on time”.

He went on: “The customer reaction has been amazing, just as predicted. The universal reaction is ‘wow’.”

The Office of Rail and Road approved all of the swanky new stations – except Bond Street, which will open later – as suitable for full passenger use.

The overall routeway for the line’s complex track and tunnel infrastructure was also given the green light.

The Elizabeth Line promises to cut journey times across the capital, whizzing commuters from Paddington to Canary Wharf in just 17 minutes.

Transport for London says the “stunning” £20billion project will also provide an additional 10 per cent capacity.

TUBE CHAOS

Construction began in May 2009 at Canary Wharf before tunnel work started in May 2012.

The Elizabeth Line will initially run 12 trains per hour between Paddington and Abbey Wood, Monday to Saturday.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson tweeted: “Absolutely delighted that the Elizabeth Line has opened to the public today.

“Long-term investment in UK infrastructure pays off – with this project alone supporting 55,000 new jobs, 1,000 apprenticeships, and forecast to boost the UK economy by £42bn.”

And just last week, the Queen herself topped up her Oyster card and bought a Tube ticket during a surprise appearance on the London Underground.

Her Majesty beamed as she joined her youngest son Edward for the opening of the new Elizabeth line at Paddington Station.

During the visit, she bought the very first ticket for the line using a commemorative Oyster card.

Edward then went to the tracks to learn about the design of the new station.

The visit ended with the prince boarding a train to Tottenham Court Road before returning to Paddington.

COMMUTERS have been warned to expect travel chaos tomorrow with London Underground workers set to stage a massive walkout.

Transport for London (TfL) has warned passengers to avoid travelling on Monday unless necessary as the RMT trade union is set to take strike action.

While some train services will operate, TfL is expecting severe disruption across the Underground network from the start of service on Monday until 8pm on June 7.

Many stations, especially those in central and south London, are expected to be closed.

It’s thought some stations that can be opened, may only be open for a limited time with the situation likely to change throughout the day, due to whether or not TfL has enough staff to safely keep stations open.

Anyone who cannot avoid travelling on Monday is advised to travel after 8am, if possible, and to complete journeys by 6pm.

On Tuesday, its expected some stations may still be closed at the start of the day.

TfL added: “Please allow more time for journeys and check before travelling.”

London buses will run as normal throughout the planned industrial action.

The recently opened Elizabeth line will run from 7am, although some stations may be served earlier, until 11pm.

TfL is advising customers to check before travelling.

Other services run by TfL, including the DLR, London Overground and Trams are not affected by the strike action and will run as normal although the service is expected to be busier than usual.

The RMT called the strike action as part of an ongoing dispute between TfL and the union over pensions, jobs and conditions.

Both sides met at the conciliation service ACAS earlier this week and while no resolution was reached, there are hopes for further talks.

As part of previous funding agreements, the Government has required TfL to work towards achieving financial sustainability by April 2023.

TfL has proposed not recruiting around 500 to 600 posts as they become vacant.

Andy Lord, TfL’s chief operating officer, said: “I’d like to apologise to London for the impact this strike will have on journeys tomorrow and on Tuesday morning.

“We know it’s going to be damaging to London and the economy at a time when public transport is playing a crucial role in the capital’s recovery.

“While our focus is always on helping everyone travel around London whenever they want, the expected impact of the RMT’s action means we have to advise people to only travel tomorrow if necessary, as many stations may be closed.

“Alternatives to the Tube, including the bus and rail networks, are likely to be much busier than usual and we expect the severe disruption caused by this strike to continue into the morning of Tuesday 7 June.

“No changes have been proposed to pensions and nobody has or will lose their job as a result of the proposals we have set out. My message to the RMT is this – it’s not too late to call off tomorrow’s strike action.

“Working with us to find a resolution is the best course of action, avoiding the disruption this strike will cause to Londoners and the economy.”

General secretary Mick Lynch said: “We are demanding a direct face-to-face meeting with Mayor Sadiq Khan to sort this mess out.

“There’s no point in our union continuing to sit opposite management representatives who have neither the inclination nor the authority to negotiate a settlement, when the power lies with the Mayor.”

The RMT has said it will continue to take other forms of action, short of a strike, meaning station staff might refuse to work overtime, until July 10 which could impact on some journeys on the Tube.

Anyone needing to travel on Monday is advised to use TfL’s real-time travel tools which will give status updates – Journey Planner and TfL Go.

TUBE stations are closed today due to strike action – meaning travel chaos for those returning to work after the Bank Holiday break.

London Underground advised people not to travel, warning of severe disruption across the network from the start of service on Monday to 8am on Tuesday.

Members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT) are taking industrial action in a dispute over jobs and pensions.

Transport for London (TfL) said some train services will run but many stations, especially those in central and south London, will be closed, while others may only open for limited periods.

Other TfL services, including DLR, London Overground and Trams, are not affected by the industrial action and will be running but will be busier.

TfL said no proposals have been tabled on pensions or terms and conditions, and nobody will lose their jobs because of the proposals it has set out.

As part of previous funding agreements, the Government has required TfL to work towards achieving financial sustainability on its operations by April 2023.
